Initially, it was tough for me to weigh my stance on this topic from different perspective. However, with the engagement with other blogs, I am clear that – Free Open access should be made available, especially in education prospect.

I came across this video from Jeremiah’s blog and I would like to summarise a few points that the speaker has pointed out:

This frame work that was brought up has an impact in the consideration of “Free Access”.

Money: In my blog post, I have raised a concern on sustainability. Paid access deters one, who is unable to afford, to have restricted access to knowledge. However, who is going to pay or assist publishers in the funding? Xinlin had brought up a good point – Crowd Funding. Moreover, Angeline has also raised Herzberg’s Motivation theory which states that personal achievement and recognition are what truly motivates an individual. So, is money still can issue?

Science: Isn’t it contradicting when our access to articles are restricted with paid access? How can one improve and advance on current framework? Open assess to view and assess a variety of articles.

Freedom to know: This allow access for an individual to research and have breakthroughs. What about the disadvantage of quality and reliability of work, affecting student’s academy? Pointed out by Kaye, Schools should ensure that students give proper referencing and Citations to raise the acknowledgement of the author’s work. In this way, with more recognition on good research, students can obtain more reliable information. To prevent counterfeits, authors can watermark their content to leave trace of the original post and give credibility to the rightful owner.

With all these disadvantages lowered, I believe, free access can be implemented.

Check out my comments for Jacinda and Charissa.
